Curriculum

Our school bases its main work on the Early Years Foundation Stage for the children in Reception and on the National Curriculum (2014) for children in Years 1 to 6.

English and Maths are taught as subjects in their own right. Follow the links via images below for more information about the teaching of Reading, Writing and Maths. In Years 5 and 6 English and Maths are taught by subject specialists and swap teachers for their lessons.

In order to make learning more engaging and purposeful we arrange the content into class themes. These are normally studied for half a term and include elements of Science, History, Geography, Art, DT and Music. Careful consideration is also given to the development of basis skills in these areas - for example teachers develop writing skills by setting real life tasks linked to the theme.

The school has an ICT suite along with portable laptops and ipads which mean that computing skills are taught both discretely and also in a cross curricular way as appropiate for the age of the children. Children are encouraged to use the interent as a research tool but are also made aware of the need for safety while online.

All classes have two lessons of PE a week and also benefit from outside coaches coming into school both in lesson time and as part of our extra curricular provision. We have close links with several local High schools who help to enhance our provision.

RE lessons follow the Blackburn Diocesan scheme of work. This can be found on the Christian Ethos section of the website.

In the class pages section of the website there are yearly overviews for each class showing the themes that are being covered and how this links to the National Curriculum.

As the children move into upper KS2, although there is still a theme, the subject specific nature of areas of the curriculum are made more specific to prepare the children for their move to KS3.

We believe in curriculum enrichment and as such offer a wide range of trips and visits linked to the class themes. In the past 12 months these have included:

  • History visits (Y1 trip to Judges Lodgings linked to Toys theme, Y2 trip to Hoghton Tower linked to Castles theme, Y4 visit to Tatton Park linked to Tudor topic and the Y3 overnight residential visit to Hadrians Wall
  • Geography visits (local study / KS1 transport trip to Lake District)
  • theatre in school (whole school panto and performance of Tom's Midnight Garden)
  • PE experiences (kayaking on canal, orienteering and a wide range of tournaments)
  • Music participation in local Music Festivals and performing at local events
