FablesReading is a skill for life. We endeavour to promote both a love of reading and a good understanding of a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts.

We follow the colour book banding scheme and use a range of different reading schemes. The main scheme is, however, based around the Oxford Reading Tree.

Children are given a reading book when they have a secure knowledge of Letters and Sounds Phase 2 (see below). They read to an adult as often as possible in EYFS (at least 3 times a week) and are enouraged to read daily at home. From Year 2 the children also have Guided Reading when they share a book in a group situation and focus on understanding what they have read.

The chart below shows the colour book bands and how they link to Oxford Reading Tree stages. There are also age related expectations but as with all such charts there will always be children working below or above the levels stated.

If you have concerns about your child's reading please come into school and speak to their class teacher.
